Greatness in a boutique brand depends on a lot of variables. The consumer gets to see the growth of a company and what it does with that growth. La Flor Dominicana has been Litto Gomez’s dream child since he left the Jewelry after a robbery. The vertically integrated product is one of a kind and has made its mark amongst true smokers. They’ve added some serious main stay cigars that include a Number 1 cigar of the Year in the Andalusian Bull. The packaging and marketing is always intricate and well executed.
No different is The Air Benderwhich refers to the process of air curing cigars go through in the curing barn. The Tobacco, strung up and color changing through the process. In fact when LFD created the Maduro in the Air Bender they actually packaged them in a box that was a model scale of their curing barn. The curing process is when natural flows through and around hung up tobacco fresh from priming.
Matatan is a slang word that translates in English to mean “Biggest Killer” but is used affectionately to mean “The Man”. The same way someone would say “You’re the Man!” in Spanish you would say “ Ta Bien Matatan!”.
The number 23 cigar of the year in 2011 is the perfect size for this blend. La Flor is well known for its power house cigars and has a solid audience. The Air Bender is medium bodied and a lot more balanced than a lot of their core line products.
In 2009 LFD made a cigar for the Museo Del Bario along with Artist Ruben Toledo and today it’s one of the rarest cigars in the market. It would be foolish for me to record anything on cigars withoutincluding LFD.
In this episode we talk about curing and curing barns, fermentation, cuts and the affects on draw, combustion and Cuba.
